The US Open, who will win?

As the US Open is set to get underway, let take a look at some of the women who could potentially win this years tournament.

The US Open often produces spectacular performances and shock results. A number of women are in form this year making predicting who will win all that harder.

Simona Halep

Going into the US Open ranked number one in the world, Simona Halep will be one to watch.

After winning her first ever Grand Slam at this year’s French Open, Halep’s confidence has gone from strength to strength. In the lead up to the tournament, Halep has played two hard court tournament where she has been in excellent form showing her skill and determination to win. This has led to her being victorious in Montreal and reaching the final in Cincinnati.

One thing that could make Haleps time at the US Open difficult is the draw. Expected to get through her first round match against Kaia Kanepi, she then has the potential chance to meet either of the Venus sisters in the fourth round and Karolina Pliskova or Garbine Muguruza in the quarter-finals.

Serena Williams

When seeding was released on Tuesday, it was announced that Serena Williams would be seeded No.17 for the US open, just one spot behind her sister Venus.

There’s no doubt as to why this has been done. With six US Open Singles titles to her name, Serena will be hoping to make a successful return to the court since having her daughter.

Playing her third Grand Slam tournament since her return, which even saw her reach the final of Wimbledon, Serena Williams is one to never count out.

The lead up to the tournament this week has seen Williams put her diplomatic skills to use by diffusing the growing controversy surrounding her ‘Catsuit‘ and the French Open. It was announced this week that the outfit will be banned at next years competition, but Serena quashed all problems announcing the problem had already been resolved even laughingly stating “When it comes to fashion, you don’t want to be a repeat offender.”

Sloane Stephens

Sloane Stephens is looking to defend her title at the 2018 US Open, but she has her work cut out for her.

On the hard courts, Stephens has the ability to dominate anyone on the WTA tour.

Starting off with a first-round match against Evgeniya Rodina, followed by a qualifier, Stephens has a great opportunity to reach the latter part of the draw.  Wildcard Victoria Azarenka is a potential third-round opponent, but Stephens has won their previous two meetings this year. Stephens only two finals loses this year have been to Halep in the French Open and Montreal. If they both reach the later stages of the tournament, Halep looms as a potential semifinal rival.

Aryna Sabalenka

Aryna Sabalenka has the potential to be the dark horse of the US Open. The break-out star of the season has been having a sensational year in which she has been in remarkable form.

The Belarusian will be going in the tournament full of confidence after winning her first WTA Tour title with victory over Carla Suarez Navarro at the Connecticut Open in New Haven. She also reached the Cincinnati semi-final last week, losing out to Halep.

Seeded 26th, Sabalenka will play her opening match on Tuesday against American Danielle Collins. Having continued to steamroller her opponents throughout the year, the rising star has the potential to reach the last two and potentially win her first major. Aryna Sabalenka is our one to watch.
